FAQ’s – Medical Marijuana Questions
Welcome to the medical marijuana program certified patient frequently asked questions page.
Is medical marijuana legal in New York?
Yes since Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed the Compassionate Care Act into law in July 2014, legalizing medical marijuana in New York State. Implementation of the CCA began in 2015 when the New York State Department of Health promulgated regulations. On July 31st of that year, licenses were awarded to five RO’s (Registered Organizations) and a certification course for physicians became available too.
How do I go about getting medical marijuana?
New York has a strict process on who is eligible for medical marijuana/cannabis compared to some states like California or Colorado for example. In fact it used to be incredibly difficult, but with the addition of chronic pain to the list of conditions that qualify you for a medical marijuana card in New York and also the fact you can complete the entire process online, it has gotten easier.
To legally buy medical marijuana/cannabis from a New York dispensary, you need to get a certification from a doctor/practitioner registered with the New York state’s MMJ program. If your doctor/primary care physician is not registered with New York State’s MMJ program, they can refer you to a doctor who is registered for your certification.
